One of the advantages of dyeing our own yarns is that we not only have the freedom to create colors, but also the freedom to choose what kind of base yarns we want to dye them on.
So when choosing hand-dyed yarns, it’s important to consider not just the colorway, but also the base!
Different bases vary in thickness, fiber content, and characteristics, making them suitable for different types of projects.
At the same time, the same colorway can look different depending on the base it’s dyed on.
Having a variety of bases to choose from is one of the things that makes working with hand-dyed yarns even more fun— and a bit more challenging too!
Here’s a quick introduction to the nine types of bases offered by Shangdrok:
20% silk 20% ramie 60% wool
Fingering
420m/ 100g
Recommended needle size: 2.5 mm - 3.5 mm
Combining the luster of silk, the strength of ramie and the elasticity of wool, this yarn is stiffer and cooler than pure wool yarns, which makes it perfect for spring or fall.
And because of the ramie in the yarn, when hand-dyed in the acid dye (which react only with the animal fibers), the color with slightly lighter then its pure animal fiber counterpart, making the color more elegant and refreshing to the eye.
50% Yak down fiber, 50% Silk
Fingering
466m/ 100g
Recommended needle size: 2.5 mm - 3.5 mm
The softness of yak down fiber plus the sheen and luster of silk, this very luxury fiber combination provides amazing texture. It is cool and smooth to the touch and the garment knitted by this yarn would be very light. and drape nicely. This yarn is suitable to knit with in all seasons.
50% Yak down fiber, 50% wool
Sport
300m/ 100g
Recommended needle size: 3.5 mm - 3.75 mm
If you are an animal fiber lover, you don’t want to miss this yarn.
Yak down fiber is famous for its softness, and is even more breathable than sheep wool. However it is not particularly light-weighted and its fiber is very short. Thus this combination of fiber content keeps all the wonderful characteristic of a wool yarn: full of warmth and elasticity, while adding even more softness and breathability.
The dye on this yarn base is saturated and deep in color.
66% Superkid mohair, 30% silk, 4% extra fine merino
Lace
425m/ 50g
Recommended needle size < 2.5 mm
Both silk and mohair are notable for their high luster and sheen, which gives this yarn its luxurious and dreamy look.
Superkid mohair makes this yarn even softer and fluffy but not itchy. It is very comfortable to the touch of sensitive skin.
Baby Alpaca 34% Super Fine Alpaca 33% Wool 33%
Worsted
75m/50g
Recommended needle size: 4.5 mm - 8 mm
I never forget the feeling of knitting with alpaca, the fluffiness felt like clouds. After dyeing the alpaca mohair, the alpaca wool gives the color a hazy and soft touch. Just like in the cloud which is blurry and imaginative.
100% Super-fine Merino (SW)
Fingering
365m/ 100g
Recommended needle size: 2.5 mm - 3.5 mm
High twist merino, knitting with high twist yarn gives a very beautiful and neat look. For knitting complex patterns, this is a choice that will not disappoint you. In addition, this yarn is very suitable for knitting socks.
100% Super-fine Merino (SW)
DK
225m/100g
Recommended needle size: 3.5 mm - 5 mm
Applicable to 4mm needle size, or larger needle sizes, you can use this yarn to experience faster and thicker works, yet at the same time enjoy the beautiful texture of this ultra-fine merino.
100% Super-fine Merino (SW)
400m/100g
Fingering
Single ply
Recommended needle size: 2.5 mm - 3.5 mm
The single-ply yarn can always show the most real and complete color, and its effect of hand dyeing. Without the cutting visual effect of multiple-ply yarns, the color is shown much brighter in finished products.
If you like to experience the bright color mixture with wool, this yarn is for you.
100% yak down fiber
274m/ 50g
Light Fingering
Recommended needle size: 2.5 mm - 3.5 mm
This 274m / 50g woolen-spun Feathery Yak is light and delicate, yet retains the essence of woolen spun—airy, warm, and soft.
The colors in this series are dyed over a natural gray base(as opposed to the usual white base). This results in a palette that, while less bright, offers greater depth and richness—subtle, yet captivating.
Being 100% yak down, it evokes a deep connection to the Tibetan Plateau in our minds. Inspired by elements of daily life in the region, we have named this Feathery Yak series with references to its land, materials, and traditions—hoping that beyond its lightness and charm, it also carries a unique imprint of Tibetan textures, culture, and memories.
