The Polina Sweater is inspired by the vibrant and symbolic artwork of Ukrainian self-taught painter Polina Raiko (1928–2004). At the age of 69, Raiko began transforming her home in Oleshky, Southern Ukraine, into a canvas, covering walls, ceilings, doors, and fences with colorful enamel paintings. Her motifs included birds, flowers, Christian iconography, and personal interpretations of her dreams and life experiences, reflecting her inner world and contributing to Ukrainian folk art.
In June 2023, the destruction of the Kakhovka Dam led to severe flooding, submerging Raiko's home and resulting in the loss of most of her artwork. This event marked a significant blow to Ukraine's cultural heritage.
Moved by Raiko's passion and artistic legacy, knitwear designer Teti Lutsak crafted this sweater as a heartfelt tribute, honoring an irreplaceable artistic journey.
