Muga golden wild silk comes from the Antheraea assamensis, also known as the Assam silkmoth or the golden muga silkmoth. This silk is known for its golden sheen, lightweight softness, and remarkable durability. Historically, it was reserved for royalty. For centuries, it has become a cultural hallmark of Assam, with its textiles and sarees being an essential presence in festivals and weddings.
This two-ply handspun Muga silk yarn is relatively fine, and its golden sheen is less pronounced than that of single-ply Muga yarn. From a distance, it appears more like a khaki tone, but on closer inspection, it reveals a subtle, captivating metallic glow. With a higher twist, the texture is coarser and firmer, yet it doesn't feel scratchy. It pairs beautifully with other yarns—when held together with another yarn, it adds a soft, understated earthy shimmer, while also bringing a subtle tactile variation to the fabric.
